Given that it's Chris Christie land I understand that approach.

Cold winters, heavy-handed state, people who seem for the most part happy to live down to the stereotype ...

One of my aunts used to live and teach high school there for about 60 years before retiring to Canada because of better health care. So you're preaching to the choir here.

Anything in the past is history.

I have no knowledge at all of NJ as I've never been there.

NY, however...

I have been there, although mainly in the 70ies and early 80ies. To visit my relatives. So no knowledge about the 90ies.

ive found something interesting for my research. partly it's about history of New Jersey. although not nineties.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset_C...an_College

sic... It has also been noted for vigorously promoting anti-Catholicism, anti-Semitism, nativism, white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan,[2][3] although in 1996 the Pillar of Fire repudiated its former association with the Klan. The college is run in the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition.

3. "Where people seek for social equality between the black and white races, they violate the edicts of the Holy Writ and every social and moral code... Segregation is our only hope. Social and political equality would plunge the world into an Inferno as black as the regions of night and as far from the teachings of the New Testament as heaven is from hell. The presumption of the colored people under such conditions would know no bounds...This is white man's country by every law of God and man, and was so determined from the beginning of Creation. Let us not therefore surrender our heritage to the sons of Ham. Perhaps it would be well for white people to take the advice of a great American patriot, Dr. Hiram Wesley Evans and repeal the Fifteenth Amendment. The editor of The Good Citizen would be with him in this."

The one thing about NJ is that you can smell it before you can see it.

When I'm done writing this reply, the time I started it will be considered history - so, yes, 1995 qualifies. I was in the military during the 90's, but high school was fun during the 80's...I think. It's all a big blur. Any why New Jersey? It's not all that spectacular; I lived there for 35 years. If you ever visit, and want to see the nice part - stay on the southern end; unless you like metropolitan and smelly.
