16 bishops and archbishops in Mexico stand accused of the cover-up of sexual abuse by 250 priests
Quote:At least 16 bishops and archbishops, among them the exarchbishop emeritus of the Primate Archdiocese of Mexico, Norberto Rivera Carrera, and six that are still in operation in Mexican cities, have been accused of covering up priests accused of sexual abuse and child abuse, according to a report by the Bishop Accountability organization, which is dedicated to identifying cases of sexual assault within the Catholic Church.
The co-director of the association, Anne Barett Doyle, pointed this Thursday at a press conference that they have registered accusations against 250 priests in Mexico, which have been covered up by the current clerical leaders of the cities of Zamora, Irapuato, Culiacán, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Piedras Negras and Tabasco.
The initial report published by the organization, and which it hopes to complement in the next three months, shows how these religious leaders silenced sexual abuse of minors in different churches or archdiocese under his charge, and have even intervened to prevent priests suffer consequences.
"There has been massive clerical abuse in Mexico, and thanks to the fact that it has been reported in the press, we are on these cases," said Anne Barett Doyle. "[ This list ] is just a start, but we have already identified other leaders who appear to have covered up sexual harassers".
The cited cases of cover-up include, for example, that the retired archbishop of San Luis Potosí, Jesús Carlos Cabrero Romero, forced the parents of a child who had been abused by Father Eduardo Córdova Bautista to sign a "declaration sworn by which they committed themselves under oath before God to keep secret and strict confidentiality the sexual crimes committed'".

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Kwame Raoul named 451 Catholic clergymen in statewide sex abuse report. More than a dozen served on the mid-South Side
After a five-year investigation, Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul released a comprehensive report this May listing hundreds of Catholic clerics and religious brothers accused of child sexual abuse. The report, which covers the state and goes back decades, names 451 clergymen with substantiated child sex abuse cases — 19 of these clergymen served on the mid-South Side.
The majority of local reported abuse cases came out of the church of Saint Clara-Saint Cyril — the building now inhabited by Shrine of Christ the King — and Mount Carmel High School, both in Woodlawn. Other local clergymen on the Attorney General’s offender list were stationed at Saint Thomas the Apostle Church and the University of Chicago in Hyde Park; Saint Columbanus — now Saint Moses the Black Parish — in Greater Grand Crossing; and Holy Angels in Bronzeville.
In addition to a list of accused clergymen and where they served, the 696-page report details several graphic, firsthand accounts of sexual abuse.
The Raoul report estimates that at least 1,997 Illinois children were victims of sexual abuse by clergymen across the state’s six dioceses.
While the 2023 report is more comprehensive than the 103 names of substantiated child sex abusers the Catholic dioceses of Illinois had publicly listed prior to the investigation, the full scope of damage is incalculable.

Former Albany diocese bishop Howard Hubbard marries
Howard Hubbard, the bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany who has come under fire in recent years for his handling of child sexual abuse cases and has faced several accusations of his own, announced Tuesday that he married a “wonderful woman” last month after the Vatican denied his request to return to civilian life earlier this year.
In his letter, Hubbard said he hopes and prays for four things: that survivors of clergy sexual abuse and their families find peace; that he has an opportunity to prove his innocence; that his marriage be one of “fidelity, love and service”; and that the Vatican will grant his laicization and recognize his marriage.
Hubbard has come under fire since retiring for his handling of priests that had been accused of sexually abusing children, admitting in a 2021 deposition that he was aware that numerous priests had been accused of abusing children but never altered the proper authorities. Instead, he ordered the alleged abusers to complete a treatment program before allowing them to return to service.
Hubbard has also been accused of committing sexual assault in seven lawsuits filed as part of the Child Victims Act, a New York state law approved in 2019 that opened a two-year look back window allowing victims of sexual assault to sue their alleged abusers.
Hundreds of lawsuits Child Victim Act lawsuits have been filed against the Albany diocese.

Apparently, you can deconvert
Quote:If you’ve been baptized in a Catholic church, as I was, the church counts you as a member for life even if you stop attending. The only way to have this reversed is to formally defect, notifying the bishop of your local diocese that you’ve left the church. After yet another preposterous moral pronouncement from the pope, I decided to do just that."
Cardinal's Response:
"Mr. ——–, with regret I will comply with your request and have your declaration noted in your baptismal record at ——– Church and a copy of your statement kept with this baptismal register. I trust you have made this declaration freely, without coercion of any kind, and clearly understand that leaving the Catholic Church makes you ineligible to receive the sacraments and that you will no longer be entitled to a Catholic burial. Since baptism is an action of Christ himself, no one can undo that; but officially you have left the Church."

Payments begin for 280 priest abuse survivors in Guam
Millions in cash contributions from the Archdiocese of Agana and its insurers have reached about 280 survivors of childhood sexual assaults by Guam priests and others associated with the Catholic Church, bringing a measure of “justice” and “healing” to those who have suffered from the abuses, some dating as far back as the 1950s.
Each abuse survivor reportedly received anywhere from about $40,000 to $100,000.
This is only the first of multiple rounds of payouts under a bankruptcy court-approved settlement plan that the archdiocese and its creditors worked on for years.
Among the survivor-claimants were raped by priests once or multiple times, sometimes for a period of months or years, when they were children. They were entitled to the largest compensation possible.
Many were inappropriately touched and groped in church property or during scouting activities.
Some were as young as 8 to 10 years old when they were assaulted. Most were in their teens, and many were altar boys at the time.
Also a key part of the settlement is the survivor-pushed protocols and others instituted by the archdiocese itself, that will help prevent more clergy sex abuses within the archdiocese.
Under the settlement plan, survivors could get paid a combined total of anywhere from $34 million to $101 million.
Among the abusive priests and other clergy named in lawsuits and claims was former Archbishop Anthony Apuron, who was earlier convicted by a Vatican tribunal for sexual assault of multiple minors. [Archbishop was never tried in court and he remains a free man.]

Facing more than 500 abuse lawsuits, San Francisco Archdiocese says bankruptcy ‘very likely’
Facing a staggering stack of more than 500 lawsuits alleging long-ago child sexual abuse by clergy, the Archdiocese of San Francisco, one of Northern California’s oldest Roman Catholic institutions, says it will “very likely” join more than a dozen dioceses across the U.S., including Oakland and Santa Rosa, and file for bankruptcy.
“It is all about protecting secrets first, and second, to reduce just compensation to the victims they have created,” SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, said in a statement that noted the San Francisco archdiocese is among few dioceses that have resisted publishing lists of credibly accused clergy. “The Archdiocese may indeed be morally bankrupt, as evidenced by their refusal to publish information about abusers that are known to them, but we doubt that they are really financially bankrupt.”
The decision comes months after the Diocese of Oakland filed for bankruptcy in May as it faced some 350 abuse claims, and the Diocese of Santa Rosa filed in March, facing about 220 claims. The Diocese of San Diego has indicated bankruptcy plans citing 400 claims, and is expected to file in the fall. The Diocese of Sacramento said earlier this year it is considering filing as well. The Diocese of Stockton resolved a 2014 bankruptcy in 2017.

New Orleans archdiocese failed to monitor priests accused of sexual abuse
Victims’ advocates detailed church’s neglect in following oversight recommendations when transferring accused clergy.
Church had no plan by which the archdiocese of New Orleans could reliably protect children from contact with clerics who had been suspended from public ministry following molestation allegations – but who for years stayed in close proximity to and were financially supported by the church.
The archdiocese’s failure to implement a meaningful oversight plan for suspected, still-living predator priests and deacons – as was repeatedly recommended to the organization – is outlined in a 48-page memorandum secretly prepared by a team of attorneys representing some people pursuing clerical abuse claims through the bankruptcy proceeding.
Deacon George Brignac had already been arrested three times on child sexual abuse allegations and was barred from publicly working as a clergyman.
Yet his safe environment certification let him give a lecture – without restrictions – to a group of students at a local Catholic elementary school about the Feast of Fatima. It even let him pick out costumes for the children to wear for a celebration of that feast organized at the school. Brignac at the time was associated with a local chapter of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic community service organization.
Media reports would later reveal that Brignac was reading scripture at local services, setting off a scandal which led to him being arrested a fourth time on child molestation charges. He died in June 2020 without going to trial.
A priest named Lawrence Hecker admitted to his superiors in 1999 that he sexually molested or otherwise harassed multiple teenage boys whom he met through work, he was recommended to be put “under some supervision and [to] be made accountable to a designated ministry monitor”, the memo recounts.
A board advising Aymond’s predecessor, Alfred Hughes, made that recommendation in 2004.
If there has been anyone designated to monitor him, that would be news to Hecker. When he sat for a deposition in December 2020 as part of a lawsuit which accused him of abuse and is part of the church’s pending bankruptcy, Hecker indicated that he “knew of no monitoring”, the memo said.
The archdiocese’s failure to follow through on such recommendations is more than simply embarrassing, the memo’s authors contend. It enabled one of the organization’s most notorious suspected abusers ever – beside Hecker – to come into close, publicly documented quarters with schoolchildren just months before he appeared on the credibly accused clergymen list released by Aymond in 2018.
