Creepypasta
I only discovered this term due to a new show.

Channel Zero

Yet, after a Google search it seems the term is not all that new.

Yet, why has no one been using the term until recently?

I think I would have noticed it. Unless I thought they were referring to FSM.

Slenderman was borne from Creepypasta right? That motherfucker...used to walk home at night from my first job - I'd work until midnight and my town's council had the brilliant idea of switching the streetlights off past a certain time to increase the risk of violent crime save money. Even though I was 18 and already a firm atheist, after I 'discovered' Slenderman that walk shit me right up, for weeks on end.

Hey, everyone's got a few things that slip through the cracks. I mean, I didn't know what "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sounded like until 2013...

Don't worry, my friend.  If this be the end, then so shall it be.
