Because if we called it 'The Pit Of Envenomed Knives', we'd lose out on the tourist trade.

Makes sense. Then I nominate Socrates
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Not a terribly difficult concept, and kinda fun

My dog
My fish
My cat
all other species except humans
Creationists are like Slinkys: It's hard not to giggle when they tumble down the stairs.

One of the people I admire the most for their brave atheism is Voltaire. He was a fearless crusader against religious cruelty and injustice. Not only did he write vehement attacks on the church's record of brutality which put him in exile but he also saved lives directly from bloodthirsty clergy, like when two teenage boys that were accused of wearing their hats while a church procession passed, and singing irreverent songs and mutilating a crucifix. Voltaire helped one to escape before trial to the Prussian army, but other was condemned to torture and to be burned at the stake. Although Voltaire interrupted and shifted case to parliament in Paris the clergy still demanded death, so Voltaire only manage to substitute to the more merciful penalty of decapitation which was carried out.
So it's because cases like that Voltaire raised outcries against injustices related to religion. Under his bombardment, France began to abandon torture and mutilation. Voltaire's efforts taught kindred spirits around the world how to fight for human rights.

Also somehow it looks to me like the most feisty atheist conversations, regarding those on internet forums, were in last decade.

Very interesting concept.

I'd have to choose

Dawkins
Hitchens
Harris
Maher
“Love is the only bow on Life’s dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher.

It is the air and light of every heart – builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody – for music is the voice of love.

Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.” - Robert. G. Ingersoll
