Scam alert: Yahoo needs $500 for each user to fix security problems.

Scam alert: Yahoo needs $500 for each user to fix security problems.
I've been advising my not-so-bright cousins regarding this. They get emails saying Yahoo is requiring $500 from each user to help solve the security hole in their software.

I tried getting them to send the money to me and I'd make sure "it gets to the right parties" but I can't lie with a straight face, even via email.  Angry

Well shit. I didn't know they were offering a discount.

I solved my Yahoo problems - all of them - by deleting my account recently.

For some odd reason they decided to override my settings and start blasting my gmail inbox with "helpful" daily summaries.

Did me a favor really - I had forgotten about the account. Now it's gone.

Buh bye.

I only have a yahoo account for fantasy football and Flickr. And now that Tapatalk hosts images, I barely use Flickr anymore.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

A Nigerian prince I know said not to fall for that because it's a scam.

Here's a question: if I receive scam mail and I click it/ open it can I collect spam/ virus or am I safe until I open/ download the attachment that is in the letter? In other words can letter itself be damaging or just the attachment?

Good question...
We get heaps of dodgy zips, exe, bat, etc. attached to emails...
Even HTML links you don't touch! Sadly, the way viruses spread is from infected accounts of which you are a contact, so the trust factor can get you before you had a chance to realise...

Many, most email clients are web enabled so maybe Tibs or others can offer any insight as to whether just looking at the email will try to infect your machine...

M$ being PC, will easily allow you to overwrite their safe defaults, so the onus is always on the user...
Plus it helps sell more computers....

I once received a scam email from Nigeria, as you do, with bad English throughout asking for my bank account details and to send them money (and, of course, they had a very African sounding name).

So I created a false email address called "Alingo Abobo" and emailed him back with a sob story of my own asking him to send me money.

Strangely enough, I never received a reply...

I've been horrid to the folks calling about my credit card payment record.  When they ask about my balance I've been giving a number between 10 and 20 thousand and then I go on to say I spent it all on porn;  burn patients eating animal feces directly from animal poo holes . . .
