This entire thread confuses me.  But mostly, just sad to read.  The survivors will surely suffer greatly, too. Sad

No, but it's a stupid thing, and conservative religious people are known for their stupidity, something that no one, atheists included, are completely immune from, but the trend is more on the side of the stupid, religious conservatives than it is on Our side.

The dad and his daughter survived.  The home may not have had working smoke detectors.

Okay, this is sad, and there was probably stupidity involved. But can you really chalk this up to Catholicism or christianity, or religion? It's just rural cusidness. Cities and more secular people have their own fire idiocies. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me...story.html

Some people who are religious are stupid. So are some atheists I know. The difference I see is that few atheists are atheists because they are stupid or mendacious, while quite a few religious extremists are extremists because they are one the other or both.

Economics more than dogma is the driver around here for wood heat. In the country here, you're dependent on a truck coming to your farm periodically (they keep track of outdoor temp and your prior usage to time visits if you want, otherwise you call when you are low or out) and fill your fuel oil or LP tank. (electric heat is unusual unless you have a ground loop/heat exchanger system)

I don't think there is a local program if you can't afford fuel oil or LP, not paying will get you shut off, and only way to get it back is to pay. Or you can move. I've had relatives with wood heat, I even house sat for 2 weeks in a house with it. I actually like it. Since the fuel is free (less time and effort with a chainsaw) you can have it 85 Fahrenheit if you want. Letting the fire go out is a nuisance though. Love the smell, hardwood fire in the country, it can be a special thing.

Friend of mine has wood heat, even gets hot water from his system. He wants to be off the grid at some point, if not for his refrigerator he would be. (enough photovoltaic to run a TV isn't too pricey, enough for a fridge is)

So, is this clickbait?

Because the title has nothing to do with the article, other than magnifying an insignificant fact.

Something must be done!

A lot of religious conservatives were (or still are) Ron Paul supporters; they believe that they don't need any type of government assistance at all.  It's not at all surprising to me to see these types of people believing that they don't need smoke alarms in their homes.  What a pity!

Well, that's not the case in this story, because Massachusetts law requires smoke and CO² detectors in all residences.

But hey, don't let that get in the way of your generalizing.

You know there's that anecdote about the french queen Marie Antoinette. Once she got news about the peasants not having bread. She was confused and asked, if they haven't got bread, why don't they eat cake?

That's what your reply on smoke detectors reminds me of.
