Alex, I'm not sure why I hate Enterprise so much. (only watched 5 or 6 episodes and that was it for me!)

You cannot easily invent a fictional human culture that the audience can internalize without using some familiar trappings of said audiences culture.
Someone else noted that they speak English in Star Wars. Anyone notice how Western the interactions are between Star Wars characters across movies? Did anyone notice the Imperial Tanks at Jeddah (a sandy place with stone buildings) had parallels with pictures from Iraq (Rogue One)? Or how the Empire uniforms really are one swastika and one totenkopf away from a selection of Nazi uniforms? (The Force Awakens really dialed that to 11) My point is that Star Wars imports a lot of cultural context from our world despite being set in a completely different space/time. If they babbled about iPhones, I would definitely consider that immersion breaking. "What part of $X don't you understand?" seems like a very minor case of immersion breaking. What Moros said. It's important to remember that these films are being made by 20th/21st century human beings. I don't think it's a fair criticism to point out the minor inconsistencies that are certain to pop up now and then. This happens in ALL fantasy fiction - Conan of Cimmeria used the word 'mesmerized', Bilbo Baggins had a wind-up alarm clock, and so on.
The quality of fiction doesn't depend on trivialities. If Star Wars sucks, it does so for other reasons. *ducks* Boru
