Yes, actually.

Perhaps not appendectomies directly, but many other tried and proven medical procedures.

And as a physicist, you get people explaining how Einstein got everything wrong.

I'll admit that most of those who have posted on forums I've seen (I'm not currently a member of any) have been anti-vaxxers and other such "individuals", and trolls.

But I have seen genuinely stupid people question medical procedures and tell us things that simply are not true.

I can't remember exactly where it was, but it was a few years ago, there was actually a guy arguing medical procedures and biology with two surgeons and three GPs, telling us everything we knew about medicine was wrong.

I would encourage those home schooling types you mention to perform home surgery on themselves.

If not why not?  How hard could it be?  Surely no tougher than healthcare generally.  What could go wrong?

I guess I shouldn't crack wise on that topic.

I fell from a ladder onto broken glass several years ago, and managed to ram a large shard in one of my palms. I was in a terrible hurry to finish the job (and get paid) and pulled the shard out with pliers, and then wrapped hand with paper towels and electrical tape.

And that was it for doctoring it.

I have nerve damage in that hand now, but it doesn't affect dexterity, the problem is an area opposite of the thumb that is mostly numb, but when it is subject to cold, it registers as 'wet'. I'm accustomed to it now, but it took awhile. The numbness isn't much of a challenge, but getting false indications of moisture was an occasional aggravating nuisance.

And it's a common enough thing for people to assume.

Unfortunately you learned the hard way that damage can be more extensive than first thought.
