Night sky over Crater Lake, OR.  Taken with a 14mm wide angle lens.  Andromeda galaxy is the faint nearly horizontal smear on the left, just above the looming Llao rock on the rim of the caldera lake.  The dotted lines are flashing beacons from airplanes which were too dim to be visible to the naked eye.   Wizard Island is in the foreground.   From my vantage point, the Milky way almost exactly spanned the the width of Crater Lake, like a celestial arch over the jewel of an earthly lake.  But even a 14mm lens is not wide enough to take that all in.    Wish I had a decent fisheye lens.



The vantage point is located at the notch on the caldera rim, to the left, right above the right most pine tree on the left. This shot is stitched together from 5 separate shots.

Milky way over El Capitan.  El Capitan is in the middle.  The lights on El Cap belong to rock climbers climbing at night to avoid the daytime heat.  The trees in the foreground are illuminated red from tail lights of distant cars.  Focus is not what it could be because it is far too dim for autofocus to function, and manual focus is difficult because Nikon lenses can focus well past infinity.



Milky way, and some clouds, over Half Dome.  Take from Glacier Point.  Andromeda is almost directly over Half Dome.
