What is Symmetry Breaking?

2. The name God particle is stupid because the name in no way adequately represents what the particle does, but primordial soup is ok I think.

3. The higgs boson would be absorbed by the gauge boson and vanish, but that only ç    if it is a massive gauge boson.

Thanks Alex. I dearly appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions. This is so cinematic and could be easily turned into a subplot.

Alex's long-winded (and clearly made up) explanation aside, I think you'll find that if your symmetry breaks, you can fix it with duct tape.

An epoxy would be more effective.

Oh man. This is something new. I'm game.

One more thing. Okay there are two kingdoms: Quantum Realm and Atomidon. The quanta go through a nanotube to Atomidon where atoms are made. Would my Higgs/gauge interaction be in the Quantum Realm or Atomidon?

@Rhonda,

That's hard to say because atoms are very much quantum objects in the real world. So what is the difference between those realms in your universe?

The Quantum Realm is where you have your loose fermions and bosons. As I said, these fermions and bosons go through a nanotube to Atomidon where they are processed into atoms. Now that I think about it, I guess turning an electron into a neutrino would happen in the Quantum Realm. But is there some form of symmetry breaking involved when fermions come together to form atoms?

Yes. Not so much the capturing of electrons, but the quarks first gather into protons and neutrons, and those are held together by pairs of quarks who by virtue of the so-called chiral symmetry breaking can travel between the protons and neutrons in the form of mesons. The chiral symmetry breaking enables them to travel lightly in pairs as messengers of the nuclear force.

Wow, this is working right into my plot.. I will look up more information about this CSB and come back to you if my studies lead to halfway intelligent questions.

Thanks again. You are the boss.

RE: What is Symmetry Breaking?
Have scientists considered the possibility that the Higgs mechanism may be the reason nothing can travel faster than light? If mass is a body's resistance to acceleration and the Higgs boson adds mass, it makes sense that the faster an object travels the more it is exposed to the Higgs field and so slow down.

Alex told me scientists don't know why acceleration causes an object to gain mass. So If I'm correct here, do I win a Nobel in physics for my contribution? Or since you have the wherewithal to test this hypothesis and turn it into a theory, you'll get the Nobel and I'll get a Pulitzer for turning it into a novel.
