Southern Baptist officials knew of sexual abuse allegations 11 years before leader's arrest

The missionary arm of the Southern Baptist Convention knew about allegations against Southern Baptist leader Mark Aderholt more than 10 years before he was arrested July 3 on charges that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl, according to police records, emails and an internal investigation from the organization.
In 2007, the International Mission Board conducted an investigation into allegations that Aderholt had a sexual relationship with the girl while he was a 25-year-old student at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. At the time of the investigation, Aderholt was one of the more prolific missionaries with the Mission Board, which has sent Southern Baptists around the globe for more than a century.
The International Mission Board did not report the allegations to authorities.

Jonathan Young, 34, of Benson, N.C. was a Sunday school tecacher at Firstborn Baptist Church in Benson. N.C. He was charged with rape of a child and other crimes. In the wake of that investigation, former church members are stepping forward with harrowing stories about Firstborn Baptist, which they describe as a cult.
One former member, Beka Foust, was brought into the church by her family at age five.
“They would put me in the closet with a light out and I would just sit there all day,” Foust told WRAL. “I was allowed to eat once.”
Foust’s sister Cherith Roberson, 32, said she had a friend who was beaten so loudly that the entire church could hear it.

Michigan couple who starved their baby to death for Jesus charged with murder

A Christian couple in Western Michigan has been charged with murder after allegedly starving their 10-month-old baby to death, reports WOOD TV.

Seth Welch and Tatiana Fusari, both 27, both told investigators that they noticed their baby daughter was gaunt but that they did not reach out for help because they feared their three children would be “removed by Child Protective Services,” and that they did not trust the medical establishment. They reportedly said they didn’t seek medical help partly for religious reasons.

“We have no reason to not believe any of you. We are sorry that our initial statements were so insensitive, defensive and reflexively protective of Bill,” she said, while some in the church’s cavernous auditorium, in South Barrington, Ill., wept openly. “We exhort Bill to acknowledge his sin and publicly apologize.”

It was a shocking blow for a church that has cast itself as a model of effective leadership for churches worldwide, and it comes at a particularly fraught moment for Willow Creek’s international network of supporters.
