Basically, yep. We've been doing it with unskilled labour all this time.

We also need to be cautious about the sweet corn (edible variety) we plant for ourselves. Since it doesn't have the genetic package 'built in' to it for resistance to various herbicides, insect and fungus resistance it is subject to all those problems. Also it helps to check the maturity dates for it and any adjoining 'field' corn as cross pollination results in some chewy kernels mixed in with the delectable ones if the dates are synchronized.
Note: the corn silks on the ears are fibers that connect each potential kernel on the cob inside the husk to the outside where the pollen can get to it. And each silk needs to contact at least one pollen grain for a kernel to form. And timing is everything, too soon or too late and no kernel. The pollen comes from the tassel on top of the plant. Smack one at the right time and you'll get a cloud of the stuff. Fortunately not too many people are allergic to it. I'm not. Dad was, LOL. And no bees are involved. um . . yeah, compared to all other plants, corn is damn weird. And without people, it couldn't propagate. A patch of corn left to itself will die out. People need to harvest it, separate the seeds and plant them properly, otherwise, it just isn't viable. The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

There's no moment in time that some adjoining block of field corn isn't coming to maturity. No matter what I plant or when, I get chewy, starchy corn. I gave up and learned to love the bomb. I plant corn anyway and then ferment it for the pig just so I can stare at the rows. I've found that it makes decent creamed corn, for cornbread, too.

Sweet corn varieties are developed for sweetness and flavor, not much effort is put in to any other traits for fear of messing up the taste.
We connoisseurs are pleased, although Roundup tolerance would be nice. BTW, sweet corn seed ain't cheap either, $50 for 5 lbs isn't unusual. Consider the teosinte picture I posted earlier, and then the ear of sweet corn above and realize that is just the result of selective breeding. Imagine what we can do with humans !!!
