How do you call someone who is religious only because it makes them feel happy?

I don't like the grease. Or the snobbery.

I'd call them intermittently happy.

Oh, and your "imagine that one or more exist" encapsulates belief pretty well because belief is when you take something to be true when you either have insufficient evidence, or the evidence points to that thing being false. Nobody believes in things with sufficient evidence. So the people you describe are agnostic deists or theists, depending on what attributes they give their gods.

The majority of believers.

Most I feel, don't really know what they are supposed to believe in but believe in something that they can live with.

The ones who read the holy books are the intolerant arseholes.

I think most believers are believers in believing, not necessarily the actual bible or god.

The kind of believing in question is not neutral, truth seeking believing. It isn't acceptance of the best supported conclusion, not submission to the facts. "True believers" believe heroically, they launch their belief at their chosen target with enthusiasm. While thrusting their belief forward they will brook no but-what-if's. Facts which do not conform are not recognized. 'True' belief is drunk with celebrating certainty, no further quest is required .. only the constant parrying with nay sayers.

That seems about right.

I'd call them the common Christian. Or common theist. That's how I see it.

I find that "Hey! Shithead! works best.  But I try not to call them very often.

AKA hobby xtians, or RINOs - religious in name only.

Or maybe "country club Christians".
