Onboard the USS Gonzalez, docked in Plymouth, England and waiting to go on overnight shore leave to London. Instead we got underway in a hurry and we spent the next few days loitering in the English Channel and listening to British radio stations while waiting for orders.
Our orders had us come home from deployment on schedule in late October rather than load up on Tomahawks and head east. It could've gone either way.

My parents split and my mom took me to her station in Germany before I was 4 and my dad was shot while training with live rounds. 75th sounds familiar but I would have to ask the family. I was 6 years old and, despite the fact that I lived half an hour from Manhattan, I don't remember it at all.
My cousin was FDNY, he died in the towers. His mother actually started a non profit dedicated to representing families of the victims. I met Hillary Clinton several times when she was a senator because of that. |
