Quote:Millions of evangelicals and other Christian fundamentalists believe that the Bible was dictated by God to men who acted essentially as human transcriptionists. If that were the case, one would have to conclude that God is a terrible writer. Many passages in the Bible would get kicked back by any competent editor or writing professor, kicked back with a lot of red ink—often more red than black.

I suppose out of 2 billion Christians there are some who see it this way, but that isn't the typical view on inspiration.

Quote:The grace of inspiration does not exempt the writer from personal effort, nor does it insure the perfection of his work from an artistic point of view.

Quote:WE AFFIRM  that God in His work of inspiration utilized the distinctive personalities and literary styles of the writers whom He had chosen and prepared.

What's your take on it, am?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

More's the pity, then, that he didn't hold out for and prepare better writers to deliver his 'inspired' message. Shakespeare, Flaubert, or Joyce . . . that would have been good.

Then again, a semi-literate fish monger might have delivered better copy than some of the literary "heavyweights" who got the nod.

It's almost as if this whole 'divine inspiration' gimmick is really just an excuse to legitimize certain parochial interests in a backward region of the world. But of course that can't be true because the book itself says otherwise.  Rolleyes

Meh, people will still be reading the Bible long after the article in the OP is forgotten.

Their bible, and their interpretation, is as likely to be as different from yours as yours is from the earliest christians.  Se....they just thought that these were true stories...and it doesn't take a god to tell true stories.

In all likelihood, future "christians" will consider them useful fictions that hint at a greater truth..like any other myth. It's already headed that way.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I like to put the literalist "Christians" in quotes. After all, any dickhead can say, "Yeah, I think Noah's Ark really happened..." I'm just not impressed by that (at all).

Considering Bible stories "useful fictions that hint at a greater truth" would fit quite nicely into Whateverist's list of reasonable Christian beliefs.

Yeah, precisey for their distance from christianity, it would be more accurately called cultural jesusism at that point...christ is a job title, not a last name.

Though there's no reason to call it jesusism either..since every myth attempts to express some truth.  They'd just be atheists who liked bible stories more than the Vedas or Gita, lol.

"Human transcriptionists" who didn't get any of JC's words down first person. Awesome. Must have been saving them for really important material.
