I don't know how it was when you were teaching, but given how it is now, we'd probably be expected to buy our own guns too. And of course as soon as an armed school teacher fails to shoot the shooter, they'll be called cowards and there will be constant calls for them to be fired. Just like there is for the armed resource officers at Parkland already. They just want to turn us into scapegoats really, so they don't have to blame police.

This is spot on.

The tyranny talk is the worst part of our gun problem. These bozos seem to think the day will come when they'll have to decide to reset the government by firing a gun. It isn't just the unfeasibility of attacking the actual military which is bonkers. There is also the matter of reaching a consensus regarding when to start. Can't exactly have an open and fair election over a thing like that. So what's the alternative, just start shooting when you've had enough? Crazy motherfuckers. Don't all ideas start with just one person?

I think guns would prevent tyranny, but I'm not worried about tyranny. The context of the discussion was whether or not guns would prevent tyranny, not if tyranny was likely. I don't think it's likely.
That being said, I think stockpiling weapons in the event of some level of societal collapse is practical. I'm not doing it, but that's just me gambling that it won't happen. I don't think the risk of situations where you'd absolutely want to be very well-armed is that small anymore.

If you want to start a thread on the topic of safe driving, by all means do so. I strongly suspect that we'd be of one mind about that.
But the topic here is school shootings.

I'm just saying you were dramatizing the threat. People believe the hyperbole. I'm sure the people who don't vaccinate their kids are terrified to send their kids to school because they can't understand probability. They only respond to the intensity in which the threat is presented to them.
If you're truly scared your kids will die in a school shooting, math says you should be terrified they are going to die all the time from many more likely events.
When you pack your family into the station wagon to go to Applebees, you should be white knuckling it as you drive the 3 miles down the highway. But you don't. Because you're almost certainly going to be fine. There's just this huge disconnect between reality and perceived reality, and it makes people say and do dumb stuff.

No it is not, why the hell would anyone want to live if a nuclear war happened, not me. We are not living in the days of conquest anymore, nukes exist worldwide, an American economy collapse would have worldwide affects and we have a narcissist as president who doesn't understand what mutual destruction is. If you manage to survive the initial nukes, you'd still be dealing with mass food source disruption, food and water poisoned by radiation, death would follow everyone around you if not you yourself.
No, the only practical thing is avoiding a collapse, not racing to one. I could give a shit less about surviving that kind of war. I'd hope if my species gets that stupid, I'd be right under a nuke and get vaporized. No need for stock piling weapons. Nope, what we need is global diplomacy, not dicks with egos as world leaders.

So Mass shootings happen on the regular, nothing needs to be done!
Societal collapse, which has never happened, WE NEED TO STOCKPILE WEAPONS!
Got it. Makes total sense. By which I mean makes absolutely no sense at all.

Don't forget that many New Zealanders obsess over a game which has much violence in it.

Really? Explain that situation to me. Does the government turn on you and you have to defend yourself? The government which possesses the most dangerous military in the world with nuclear arsenal, warships, submarines, fighter jets vs you with your glock. Or does Russia decide to attack US? All the Russians are affected with dementia and forget about the US nuclear arsenal, the UN and decides to attack US, say you stockpile 500 or 5000 semi automatic weapons, you with your gang of people with these guns plan a attack? Hellooo?? They use satellite to find your exact position and air strike you and your buddies with a plane that travels at the speed of sound. Boom. Game over. Tudu tudutu tudu tu du.

In regards to societal collapse, I mean, it's coming right? Assuming you're not a climate change denier, we're talking decades before things are predicted to take a really bad turn for the worse. That's assuming something doesn't come along before it. When things do go south, you're going to want guns.
People keep posting the doomsday clock on this site, and flipping out because Trump is going to get us all killed. Is that reaction just an act?
There's a hilarious mix em up in the people who are preparing for doomsday who don't believe in climate change and think Trump is great, and the people who think climate change is going to break the world, and Trump is Hitler, who don't think anyone needs guns.
They're all fucking stupid is my general opinion.

I'm thinking more along the lines of climate change causes severe food shortages, and people start killing each other over necessities. Or something happens to the electrical grid, and we return to the 1800's, except none of us have any survival skills. Nuclear war decimating the world and things devolving into some sort of warlord/militia scenario ruling over small areas. It's all a house of cards.
Again, I don't think it's so likely that I'm running out to get a bunch of guns. But I recognize that I'm sticking my head in the sand a bit by not being prepared.

Oh, I didn't realize you were planning on shooting the sun in order to combat climate change. There's a solution I haven't heard of before.
