"Voice of god"
November 25, 2010 at 3:55 am
(This post was last modified: November 25, 2010 at 3:58 am by Justtristo.)
I am interested in hearing other people say they have heard god or a god speak to them in their heads. To be frank I have never had that sort of experience in my whole life, I have a conscience yes, but someone else talking to me in my mind no.
Anyway when I think about people hearing the voice of god, I generally associate it with mentally ill people hearing voices in their head. Maybe it needs to be asked if people who hear the 'voice of god' in their heads are mentally ill say like schizophrenics.

I agree with LastPoet. A lot of people hear the 'voice' of conscious thought and attribute it to their god, but if they literally hear an actual voice in their head... that's a problem. You know... unless they happen to be clairvoyant... then it's rather expected.

Hilariously when I was a theist I used to think something was wrong with me in that I couldn't hear voices of angels or god, little did I realise I was sane, and how far my indoctrination had sabotaged my capacity to think things out rationally.
But it's a sober moment when you wonder just how many people have used religious beliefs as a cover or distraction for their mental illnesses or disorders instead of confronting them head-on and seeking much-needed professional help.

Consider, for just a moment, the sheer egomania it takes for these people to think that 'god' (which they have conjured up to be this all-powerful being) would actually "talk" to them about their shitty little lives.
What assholes.

At it's most benign it's a missattribution of subconscious queues, and it's most severe it's a mental illness.
I think this is pretty clear when given the fact that this supposed God could not contradict himself (is always logically consistent) yet the people who experience communication with this God often have contradictory affirmations.

Reminded me of Abraham, then of this:
How so many still think that some guy listening to a booming voice in the sky, and attempting to murder his own son is "righteous" and "praiseworthy" is flat out repulsive.

No-one (including the biblical characters like Moses) has ever emerged from a conversation with a god, with anything that we didn't already know. No ground breaking information, to the benefit of humanity, has ever come back from any such encounter. Amazingly it seems that god is much keener and telling people to kill other people and/or telling people what they want to hear. If I heard voices I would be more inclined to doubt my sanity, than believe the creater of 4bn galaxies each with 4bn stars might be interested in a chat.

The search string "God told me to kill" on google generated 64,700 hits in .23 seconds.
Imagine if the question were asked in Arabic?
