I've never heard anything nice about the Earps from legitimate sources. The penny dreadfuls cleaned them up to the point where Wyatt got a full Hollywood funeral, but that's just Hollywood.

Yeah, as much as I like Westerns, I really prefer the "revisionist" Westerns, the kind where a guy in a white hat rides into town and robs a bank or shoots a dog, to quote an old Dragnet episode. The traditional Western tries way too hard to shoehorn a good vs. evil (or at least good guy vs. bad guy) narrative into it even when it's not even close to the way the real West actually was. And then, around the same time Hollywood finally embraced the Revisionist Western, the genre as a whole fell out of fashion, due in no small part to it becoming really fucking hard to create them on the massive scale they had previously been doing (though Italy did a pretty good job of taking the mantle for about a decade, but the Speghetti Western tended far more towards the Revisionist.)

"Dirty Little Billy" for the win.

Quote:Interesting. What do you know of Doc? Was he as much of a bad ass as depicted in the 1993 film? If you don't know I will just go research it myself, but you seem to know your stuff [Image: smile.gif]

Holliday more or less lived up to his reputation.  As a gambler, he pretty much had to be a skilled gunfighter.  Historians agree that he never lost the 'southern gentleman' demeanor.

The film took liberties with him as well, though.  He didn't kill Johnny Ringo for example, and - like the Earps - he was somewhat shady when it came to law and order (fined and jailed several times for illegal gambling, and so forth).

Don't know that one. I only know the Peckinpah version.
