This is so terrible. I heard on the news that until some gun law issues can be worked out, the type of environment we're in now, we need to learn how to deal with active shooter situations.

The Art of Manliness actually has an article explaining the sort of things that one needs to know to deal with an active shooter situation.

Roughly, it involves looking for anomalies beforehand, and when it's happening, do one of three things (in this exact order of precedence): run, hide, or fight. The article emphasises that actually fighting the shooter should be a last resort. Running or hiding from a dangerous situation might not seem manly, but, then again, the site isn't called "The Art of Suicidal Idiocy." And the section about fighting the gunman more or less presupposes that you don't have a firearm, and even emphasises the use of improvised weapons (anything from the more obvious suspects to a flashlight to a mug of coffee, whether the mug itself or the scalding hot coffee within) and hand-to-hand combat.

Granted, this doesn't actually stop these attacks from happening in the first place, but the Republicans (and, by extension, Congress itself) have made abundantly clear that they have no interest whatsoever in preventing the underlying causes behind it, whether the societal issues that lead to crime or even keeping guns out of the hands of those who want to use them for ill purposes on other people.

Holy fucking crap. We make firearms like candy and hand them out like candy. 

I am tired of "motive". It does not fucking matter to me that it is mentally ill, workplace grudge, rejected lover, disturbed teen, religious, they all got access to firearms. 

And these mass shootings that make national news are a FRACTION of firearm injuries and deaths. Most are suicide, second is domestic murder, and third is accidental.
