t.A.T.u.'s Faux-Lesbian Singer Wouldn't Accept a Gay Son

That's... disappointing... I thought they really were lesbians and I used to love that song... but I'll never see them in the same light after this.

Well, we all did until Yulia turned out to have been impregnated by her married lover. After that, I learned to just treat is as a sort of theater; I could enjoy Beatlemania knowing they weren't the actual Beatles, I could enjoy t.A.T.u. knowing they weren't actual lesbians.

If it makes you feel any better, Lena is more tolerant, having said in response to her former bandmate's remarks: "Hey, all! I am seeing some comments lately regarding my position about LGBT and my religion. I can say one thing: God is teaching us to live in love, to be tolerant and not to judge other people! And I do so! Love is love and it is a wonderful feeling! I think everybody should be free to love who they love and be with who they want to spend their life with! Xoxo"

Ah... I only knew that song really (well, single)... I don't follow the cult of celebrity.

It's just strange to find that a homophobe and a Christian would choose to make that song in the first place. I still like the song, but the whole thing's just weird to me now. I wonder what these revelations are going to do for their sales... could go either way I think.

And, of course, t.A.T.u. was more a manufactured band than an organic band. They did not write that song, they were just told to perform it, and presumably paid handsomely for it.

Also, their time has long come and gone. A drop in sales might not mean that much anyway. The band itself is defunct, at any rate.

Right, sorry, wrong religion then but same principle. Anyway, interesting... I take it you are... or were a big fan then? If they're defunct now then I guess their sales... or at least their profile... will go up with all this... 'No such thing as bad publicity' and all that and it could maybe be a PR ploy in the first place... a little bit of controversy to resurrect a dead band.

I was a fairly big fan. Their second album wasn’t as good, and I figured out that once you stripped the “lesbian schoolgirls” fantasy from it, there wasn’t a lot of substance to the music. To be honest, I only found out about them after they came out as straight girls pretending to be lesbians, because, well, when it comes to Russian culture, Americans are always a step behind. I was a bit late to the party, to be honest.

Pretty much. To be fair, their heyday was back when it was legitimately daring. At the time, the video was banned from several music video shows for being too steamy (the potentially underage girls might have had something to do with it, even if there wasn’t any actual porn in it.)
