I’d say:
The first time I watched “The Gold Rush”
Discovering the guitar and The Beatles
Getting a steel bat to the face and barely getting a reaction from the school besides “stop crying, for fuck sake.”
The first time I jacked off. (Also, shortly after, watching a brief scene in The Visit and finding out I was turned on by Bryce Dallas Howard’s feet.)
Finally leaving the hellhole that was my old grade school.
Finding the first legitimately decent woman in my life with my guidance counselor.
Joining the academic bowl in High School.
Being the whole academic bowl for one college year and still managing to defeat most of the other schools in the one tournament we did.
Getting into Columbia.
Losing my mind enough that I finally got some psychological help.
Joining the Anglotopia team.
Discovering the girl of my dreams, and then finding out she’s gay.
My mother finally dying (my therapist, my Dad, and I suspect this may have been the best thing to happen to me.)
Graduating with honors and working on a story with bestselling author Jane Hamilton.
Falling into a severe depression, and getting over it with the help of A) Accounting courses, B) a job at a candy store, and C) Luvox.
Being published (7 stories and a brief memoir) in an anthology.
Those are the highlights so far.
Comparing the Universal Oneness of All Life to Yo Mama since 2010.
I was born with the gift of laughter and a sense the world is mad.

1953 - made it out of the birth canal
1978 - life goes to hell in a hand basket: mangled in a car wreck, brother dies, divorced, first dog killed, quit job, depressed
1979 - tentative restart: buy into house in Oakland with a couple friends, live with room mates, fog begins to lift
1982 - get together with Lia, we get married the next year (anniversary #35 was six days ago)
2015 - retired from 25 years of teaching, got Smokey, began reading so many good books and began losing weight

"Every luxury has a deep price. Every indulgence, a cosmic cost. Each fiber of pleasure you experience causes equivalent pain somewhere else. This is the first law of emodynamics [sic]. Joy can be neither created nor destroyed. The balance of happiness is constant.
Fact: Every time you eat a bite of cake, someone gets horsewhipped.
Facter: Every time two people kiss, an orphanage collapses.
Factest: Every time a baby is born, an innocent animal is severely mocked for its physical appearance. Don't be a pleasure hog. Your every smile is a dagger. Happiness is murder.

It's a shame that the one true barefoot girl I've met (even in classes, mind you, although she did sometimes wear sneakers outside and take them off inside) turned out to be so fundamentally incompatible.

2001: 9/11 had a major impact on my family. I had cousins die and my mother was a few blocks away and still struggles with PTSD. I, personally, was not affected much, but it certainly stands out in my life.
2013: Getting diagnosed with kidney disease
2015-2016: The 1.5 year period I was hopelessly addicted to stimulant drugs
2017: Kidney failure/dialysis/transplant/return to college after medical leave
2018: Graduating college, and meeting an incredible young woman
2017 was by far the most defining period of time in my life; for the evolution of my personality, passions, attitude, and beliefs.

I pussied out here. I arrived for duty with a squadron of river boats on detached duty on Jan. 14th, 1970. Two years later I was due to rotate back to the world when I was offered a job with the local government, teaching their people to use the boats. Another two years in country. As I was getting a "stipend" equal to three times my Navy salary I could live with this. However, just two months later, on a training cruise, all five of our boats were hit from both banks by RPGs. A mother beautiful ambush. One survivor out of twenty-five men. That's my one of my landmarks.
