Does this guy have something, or is he blowing smoke?

John Houseman's brother.

Pattern? All the numbers except for 2 are odd.

<shrug>  I find this intriguing because it seems like a lot of the critiques of Atiyeh stem from the fact that he's 90 years old, and historically most mathematicians make their major discoveries in their early years -- 20s and 30s.

Personally I don't have any problem with the idea that an old fart mathematician might make a major contribution to the field now and then -- "very low probability" isn't exactly the same as "never happens".

I am skeptical, however, based on the number of attempts which have been made -- and failed -- to prove RH, to date.

If he has proven it, this could have major ramifications for cryptology, data security, and privacy.

The answer is 6. The answer is always 6.

Well, the word I have been hearing is that not only has he not proven it, but there are some very basic flaws in what he has written. This is after he gave a failed proof last year of a different major result. It is more sad than anything else. And he has been told by colleagues and friends to not make major announcements until someone else checks his results.

Atiyah was/is one of the great mathematical minds of the last century. The Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem is widely regarded as some of the deepest and most beautiful make of recent times. But, from what I am hearing, he is going a bit senile.

Plus, if he is that old, it's not very likely that he would such a major discovery at that age, considering the expected level of fluid intelligence.
