Quote:Commonly used nicknames for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — such as the “Mormon Church” or “LDS Church” — should now be added to the list of things the church opposes, said church President Russell M. Nelson.

Nelson has raised the issue several times since August, most recently Sunday at the church’s twice-annual worldwide general conference, where he announced that using such shorthand “is a major victory for Satan,” the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Nelson also said that the word “Mormon” is insulting to Jesus.

They certainly don't have the market cornered there, that's for sure.

Quote:Homeland Security inspectors who made an unannounced visit to a private, for-profit immigration jail in California in May found major violations of federal detention standards, including cells with nooses dangling from air vents, detainees losing teeth from lack of dental care and one disabled inmate left alone in a wheelchair for nine days.

The infernal conditions are described in a report issued Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security’s office of inspector general, which audited the facility, overseen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), in Adelanto, Calif. It has a capacity of 1,940 detainees and is run by GEO Group, which owns and operates 71 federal prisons and detention centers with a combined total of 75,500 beds, according to its website.

GEO declined to comment and referred inquiries to ICE.

Where I live, this is the normal conditions of any prison. Actually a prison like this is considered a 5 stars arrest camp.

Trump is friends with lots of dictators (like MBS and Putin), a torture enthusiast also, so no wonder some American prisons look like this.
Even before him, the U.S had some very terrible prisons like the infamous Abu-Ghuraib in Iraq, but I'm sure and certain that this will only increase more and more in Trump's time.

New driver's licenses are giving Minnesotans a third option for gender designation.

Minnesotans can now put an "F" on their ID for female, an "M" for male, or an "X" for what officials are calling non-binary gender.

The state's Department of Public Safety said it made the change as part of its adoption of the new Real ID standard, although it wasn't officially announced as part of the transition.

The agency said in a statement that the third gender option is in line with other self-reported descriptions, such as weight, height and eye color and allows it to better serve all Minnesotans. Federal regulation allows the change.

Hell, we did that months ago.

Homicides are at record rates in Mexico. Nearly 30,000 people were murdered last year. This year is on track to be worse, with more than 33,000 homicides registered by the end of August.

Rising rates of homicides and drug violence have created an overflow at Mexico's morgues. So much so, that several cities have resorted to storing dead bodies in refrigerated trailers.

This sparked a national scandal after some residents complained about the stench coming from one of the trailers parked in their neighborhood in the western city of Guadalajara.

Authorities say there are two trailers packed with human remains, and dozens more bodies stacked up in the city's morgue. They say there are 444 in all. Some of the bodies have been in storage for more than three years.

Most White Americans’ DNA Can Be Identified Through Genealogy Databases

Quote:Within two or three years, 90 percent of Americans of European descent will be identifiable from their DNA, researchers found. The science-fiction future, in which everyone is known whether or not they want to be, is nigh.

“It’s not the distant future, it’s the near future,” said Yaniv Erlich, the lead author of the study. Dr. Erlich, formerly a genetic-privacy researcher at Columbia University, is the chief science officer of MyHeritage, a genetic ancestry website.

The science involves a search for third cousins. To identify a person through a DNA sample, an investigator uploads a previously analyzed genetic sequence to a database. The goal is to find someone who shares enough DNA to place them in the third cousin or closer range. Most of us have at least 800 people out there, somewhere in the world, who fall into this category. So long as one of these people is in a database, a skilled sleuth may be able to use other publicly available information to start building a family tree and figure out the person’s actual identity.
