Scales question. What is the answer?
#11
RE: Scales question. What is the answer?
I remember this one from my childhood:

A shepherd has 3 possessions, a lion (don't ask why), a lamb and a stack of hay

He wants to cross the river with all his possessions, but the boat only has capacity for one item plus the driver (he has to drive).

If he is not present to control the situation, the lion will eat the lamb and the lamb will eat the grass

How does he get these three across the river?

How does he get these three across the river?

Assuming he can take more than one trip:

1. Cross with the lamb (the lion doesn't eat the grass)
2. Go back and get the lion. (Lion doesn't eat lamb when it gets there because he is there)
3. When he brings back the lamb, grab the grass and take it to the other side (Lion doesn't care about the grass)
4. Go back and bring the lamb again.

Took me a few minutes, but that's my guess. Smile

Very good question. It took me a few minutes to think about taking the lamb back.

I would take my ferry across the river and tell the shepherd, ‘Tell which of these 8 balls is heaviest and I’ll help you get your gear across the river.’

I want to get back to the temple balls and ask why we're not smoking them. Fuck the weight.

Big Balls is lying to you, sheeple. All the balls are, and of a right have to be, all the same weight.

You have 8 balls that look identical, but one in the group is slightly heavier than the others.  You also have a single balance scale to find the heavier ball.  What is the least amount of times you would have to use the scale to consistently identify the heavier ball?  What method would you use to find that ball each time?

First one to get it wins a stuffed rainbow unicorn.

There's an alternate way to solve the original problem.

You can weigh them 3vs3. If the heavier ball is in one of those two groups in will tip the scale to that side, then you work from that group of 3. If it's not, you know it's one of the remaining 2 balls. So you can actually get it in two if it happens to be in the set of two, but no more than 3 if it isn't.

Good thinking.
