I love Avira. No issues in years... Except sometimes it complains about some game hacks...

I use avira too, especially it's heuristics based detection is the best in my experience compared to avast, avg, e.t.c! But don't rely on just your installed antivirus, always keep a bootable rescue disk handy.

AS I understand it, Clam AV is an on-demand scanner so much less likely to interfere with anything.
I'm not sure about Linux as I don't use it, what i do know though is there is much less malware out there for it (windows being a much more lucrative market) There probably are things you should tweak in a basic insulation of Linux though.

I've never had any issues running AV software, but not a lot of benefit, either. It's never warned me of a dodgy file, and it's of limited use in that it warns me that I'm about to enter a dodgy site, a warning I typically ignore and browse the dodgy site anyway. I occasionally get reports that a web page has tried to make unauthorized access to my computer, and that the AV has blocked the attempt, but that would probably be of less use if I just stayed away from bad sites.
The conventional wisdom holds. Following best practices is many times more effective at protecting you than anything else.
