In my opinion, the Democratic Party handling what is obviously a Republican stunt in the senate very badly. Bitch McConnell is bringing up the Green New Deal resolution for the senate to vote on. Ordinarily, the Green New Deal would simply be dead on arrival in the senate, but McConnell wants to embarrass the Democrats by showing how divided they are. The Dems are all in a tizzy about it. If they vote for it, they make the party seem to be united in promoting evil socialism. The Republicans will joyously screaming about socialist Democrats from now through 2020. Every single Democrat will me painted with the socialist brush.
OK. So what? Why fear the socialist brush so much? Polls show that the majority of Americans now have a favorable view of socialism, so its not the most toxic brush that you can be painted with. Further, people are perceptive enough to see through the ruse. Everyone is going to know that the vote on the Green New Deal is intended to divide the party, and that there is no chance of the resolution passing the Republican controlled senate. So a vote for the Green New Deal is just a vote of party solidarity, rather than an actual vote for the Green New Deal.
Strategically, it seems to make sense to just unanimously vote for the resolution, knowing that it is going to fail. And after the resolution fails, demand that the Republicans come up with legislation to address climate change that Republicans can support. The Democrats can easily spin the Green New Deal as a radical response to Republican inaction on the issue of global warming. Any Democrat who doesn't want to be branded as a socialist can easily say that they voted in favor of the Green New Deal simply as a response to Republican inaction.
But instead, a bunch of the Dems want to vote against the Green New Deal to make a public show of not being socialists. Centrist Democrats are so obsessed with 'not being socialists' that they routinely bat for the other team. They are so obsessed with 'not being socialists' that they just can't read the room. Go ahead and vote for the Green New Deal. Stars aren't going to fall from the sky. Planets aren't going to fly out of orbit.
