Really picking and choosing there. I'm sure you can find places in America where the water is crystal clear, and great for your health, but Flint still has flammable liquid coming through the pipes.

Polis City state in greek, Polites meant citizen of the city state , Politkos meant matters pertaining to the state which became politics hence politition.

Knowing almost nothing about Michigan, I am going to make a guess here. Mackinac Island is either a wealthy area or is a resort that brings in lots of tourist dollars and is good PR for the state...or some combination of those things.
