This Is Stupid Even For A Catholic School
Pastor Bans Harry Potter Books, Says Spells Are Real

Quote:Rev. Dan Reehil, a pastor at the school, sent out an email to parents telling them that the seven books in the series were being removed from the library. In the email, he tells parents, "The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text."

Now the kids are safe, because they CLEARLY can't access Harry Potter stuff anywhere else.

I wonder what would happen if a bunch of people yelled "Avada Kedavra" in his presence. If he's so convinced that the curses and spells used in the books are real, I mean.

Good grief.

When I was in Catholic school they just wanted us to read. I don't recall any book being a no-no. By middle school most of us owned OUIJA boards. You would think that would present the perfect opportunity to summon the dark side.

For a few weeks when I was in high school the curriculum (ahem) was listening to and discussing Jesus Christ Superstar. I guess my little Catholic hometown wasn't so uptight.

He probably got caught waving his " wand" at some kids and he's deflecting.

Typical clergy.

I would bet my kid's safety on the HP book and movie series combined, more than being with a priest.

Unfortunately nothing new. Few months ago priests in Poland burned Harry Potter books along with other "evil" items

They must be preparing for second coming of Hitler.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

And to think it must only be Evangelical fundies that do this shit.

I can actually understand - without agreeing to it - the twisted sort of faux logic that leads to banning books.  But to do it because you think the magical spells in the books are going to manifest evil spirits?  Come on.

Fantasy books were not banned when I was in Catholic schools (1953-1966), but books on evolution, comparative religious studies, or atheism were not available in the school libraries either.
