This is actually a tiny, almost negligible eruption for any volcano, and White Island is actually a fairly large stratocone volcano. But it doesn’t matter if you are foolish enough to stand not near the crater, but in the middle of the crater.

I've lived on or near three shield volcanoes, Fuji, Etna, and Pinatubo. Fuji was extinct, Etna a grumbling old man, and Pinatubo, an utter bitch.
