LGBTQ Nation

Quote:The government of California has banned all state-funded travel to Georgia in protest of House Bill (HB) 1084, Georgia’s recently passed law banning transgender girls from playing on sports teams matching their gender identities.

California has also banned all state-funded travel to Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, and Utah as a result of each state recently enacting anti-LGBTQ legislation.

Large gaming event set for Florida canceled because of Don’t Say Gay law
LGBTQ Nation

Quote:The organizers of a gaming convention who originally planned to hold their event in Florida have canceled, citing both Florida’s lax COVID-19 policies and its hardline anti-LGBTQ stance. The group said that the state is no longer “a safe place for our community.”

‘Interview With the Vampire’ Gets It’s Gayest Treatment Yet
Gayety

Quote:Anne Rice has been writing queer characters for a long time. Published in 1976, many say the subtext of Interview with the Vampire tells the story of a same-sex couple in an abusive relationship. As her stories progressed, they only got more explicitly LGBTQ+. Nearly the entire community has been represented at some point in The Vampire Chronicles. The first book saw a delightfully faithful rendition come to the big screen in 1994, which is hardly a surprise since Rice wrote the screenplay herself. Now, almost three decades later, Interview with the Vampire will see a new television adaptation.

A FAITHFUL ADAPTATION
If a 13-book series (21 if you count crossovers and spin-offs) seems a bit daunting to take on, the movie is a great place to start. With an a-list cast and incredible performances from Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and a ten-year-old Kirsten Dunst, if you can believe it. The film received two Oscar nominations, one for Best Art Direction and the other for Best Original Score. Additionally, Kirsten Dunst was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her captivating role as Claudia in the film. While the film was criticized for excluding some of the queer subtexts, it accurately captures the essence of the characters. In the end, it is mostly faithful to the source material as it was in 1976. Put simply, this movie is unmissable.

HOW WILL THIS SHOW COMPARE?
The series appears to deviate from the books much more than the film in other ways. Most notably, Louis’ story starts in 1910 — almost 120 years after it begins in the books. This will no doubt shift the themes explored in the book and alter the story. Additionally, based on the trailer, the film will be much gayer than the movie and, indeed, the first book. This appears to be a conscious decision to embrace the characters’ true nature. Although Rice died last December, she and her son Christopher are credited as Executive producers of the show. One would hope this means that the show will be a sincere retelling of a story almost half a century old despite some of these changes.

Despite, and in many ways because of, these changes, we are very excited to see this story play out when the series premieres on AMC+ in October. As source material fans, we cannot help but be excited to see the characters come to life.

“Chafing at the limitations of life as a Black man in 1900s New Orleans, Louis finds it impossible to resist the rakish Lestat de Lioncourt’s offer of the ultimate escape: joining him as his vampire companion,” reads the show’s official description reads. “But Louis’s intoxicating new powers come with a violent price, and the introduction of Lestat’s newest fledgling, the child vampire Claudia, soon sets them on a decades-long path of revenge and atonement.”

Senate to hold off on marriage vote until after mid-term election
Washington Blade

Quote:Despite indications the U.S. Senate would soon take up legislation seeking to codify same-sex marriage into law, the legislation now appears to have to wait until after the mid-term elections.

............

Baldwin, speaking to reporters after the weekly meeting Democratic caucus, was more specific about the time frame and said the vote would have be after the congressional mid-term election, according to a report in Politico.

They don't have the votes.  They are hoping some Republicans will join when elections aren't looming, but my guess is the legislation is completely dead.

Watched An Open Secret a last night, and one thing struck me was that Todd Bridges talks about the “Bicycle Man” episode of Different Strokes (despite the documentary focusing more on a different era of pedophiles) and it even includes the scene near the end where Willis says "I never would have guessed that Mr. Horton was...you know...gay." And the cop explains "He's not, Willis. That's the common fallacy about child molesters. They're not gay, they're only interested in little boys or little girls, not adults." And it got me thinking about the modern day: On the one hand, it’s a bit problematic that this is the only time homosexuality is mentioned on the show, and Arnold and Willis seem disgusted by the whole concept.

On the other hand, not only was this message given in 1983, when many states still criminalized gay sex, and I suspect that a majority of people who heard of the burgeoning AIDS pandemic thought the gay men who were disproportionately affected by it were reaping what they supposedly sewed, but disturbingly, almost 40 years later, this assumption has returned to mainstream right-wing “thought.” since apparently any LGBT person who dares to exist within the line of sight of a child is automatically grooming them. Hell, some people believe this so fervently, they’ll go through all the trouble of moving to another state just so he can go to a local school board meeting and call them groomers.

Rainbow Armbands Are New Flash Point for FIFA and Qatar World Cup

FIFA and World Cup organizers came under pressure on Wednesday from a group of European soccer federations who said they planned to have their captains wear armbands with a rainbow heart design as part of an anti-discrimination campaign during international matches and at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The group of European soccer federations, which includes the World Cup contenders England, Germany and France, joined forces on Wednesday in announcing their intention to have their captains wear the armbands, which feature a so-called One Love design that is similar in design — but not identical — to the well-known flag that serves as a symbol of LGBTQ pride.

The announcement is the latest front in a rift between soccer governing bodies and nations competing in Qatar who have faced sustained pressure from fans, human rights groups and others to take a stand against the Gulf country’s laws against homosexuality and the treatment of the hundreds of thousands of foreign laborers who helped the tiny emirate prepare for the Middle East’s first World Cup.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
