Could've just as well created creatures using some form of atomic fusion as an energy source, given the right fundamental constants of nature. A better question is, why stars though?

I built controls and instrumentation for closed loop aquaponics systems years ago. So I have a different perspective on poop. Your objection is like saying, why do we need to breathe? In Midnight at the Well of Souls there's a race that is basically an intelligent plant. They root at night and need at least an hour of sunshine each day to stay healthy. If Jack Chalker and think up a better system than we have now I'm at a loss as to why a god couldn't do it.
Why place the shit and piss functions so close to the reproductive functions? God should have known that would be confusing for some and tempting to others.
