And it certainly doesn’t justify OLB calling people who are looking for relief ‘cunts’ and ‘twats’.

OLB isn't the only one on here to use extreme language.

Didn't someone, a regular, recently use "coloured people". which apparently passes the sniff test though it's quite offensive...but at least he didn't use the "N" word, which is a forum no-no.

I never said he was the only one to use extreme language.  I'm saying, in this case, calling desperate, frightened people names isn't justified.

RE: Cancel Rent Movement
I think that the idea that any of this relief money actually helps the poor grift, as though they don't immediately hand it over to someone else, is precious.

If we're worried about the value of the dollar and some program tanking it, remember that giving it to john q is just an expedient way to subsidize commerce and loss. If anyone's switching over to leaves as currency, that would be the people the money actually goes to, and it's not exactly trickling down.

We already have a problem with homelessness. The problem isn't that people are lazy grifting cunts. If we're seriously considering the lazy grifting cunt theory with respect to this issue - we would have to be talking about slumlords, and we probably should make sure that even if rents are forgiven, slumlords don't get any relief money. That's their business model already.

RE: Cancel Rent Movement
I don't think it's entirely reasonable to completely cancel rent, but I certainly think some amount of landlord/renters reform is in place.  I've seen some horror stories about landlords who will evict for any reason or no reason.  And there are places where affordable housing is getting harder and harder to find.  I've lived in some real slums where it was obvious that the landlord isn't using your rent money to maintain your residence.  Other places are getting more and more run down, but rent keeps going up.

Right now?  I absolutely think evictions should be canceled.  Electric and water and gas and maybe even internet and phone bills should stay on, too, regardless of the cost to big companies.  If we want to encourage people to stay home, stay inside, maintain social distancing, they're kinda gonna need a house to stay in.  I'm not saying they shouldn't be billed for those services, but enforcement of those bills can be on hold until social situations won't literally kill people.

RE: Cancel Rent Movement
One person hoarding multiple properties prices out the poor. Manhattan and San Francisco both have enough vacant investment property to house their entire homeless populations. There needs to be massive reform for several reasons. The transition out of homelessness is very difficult. Working class jobs don’t cover rent. Homelessness is a public health issue. Property cannot be hoarded without severe consequences for the poor. People who are priced out of a community have no incentive not to destroy the place.

Ultimately the wealth gap is way too large but when we let it encroach on people’s access to shelter it becomes uniquely insidious.

America has the wealth and resources to provide universal nutrition, housing, and health care. Let’s do it!
