I think we need tiered voting to allow the eventuality of a third party or independent prospect to be possible. People need to believe that they can vote for a third party but have their vote count for one of the mainstream candidates if the third party candidate goes nowhere. Like I should have been able to vote for Jo Jorgenson as my primary with Joe as a fallback incase she wasn't competitive.

I suspect it is going to take a great independant - someone free of party bias.

I agree. I'm surprised that I do, but I agree wholeheartedly. Dems, Repubs, who cares when the system the two parties are operating under is like choosing between cholera or gonorrhea, when it's gotten so bad that they're both of them starting to show significant signs of antibiotic resistance to treatment. Interesting. Is this a spin-off from direct democracy? According to the wiki article about ranked voting, Australia has used this system since year 1918.
