What will you do when GM goes all electric?

RE: What will you do when GM goes all electric?
Quote:Where exactly is YOUR "clean energy" going to come from?

You aren't going to get it with windmills and solar panels - despite all the cheery, optimistic blathering we are deluged with......
Says the man who knows nothing either of those things

Quote:Last year we used 4 TRILLION kilowatt hours in the US....

Do the.math..
Yup please do the math. Be sure to show your work , lol

Quote:FYI - A newer nuclear power plant with no problems can generate about 5,000,000 mwh if run 24/7/365....

See the scale of the problem yet?
Lol, and you moronically think fossil fuels will be able to maintain that level of energy indefinitely and just constantly kick the can down the road so it's someone else's problem.

Quote:To environmentalists -- how is that "don't flood my river" and "no nuclear in my back yard" going?
That's being slightly unfair

Hydro dams do cause damage to surrounding area's and it's a legitimate concern. Not to mention they are a risky investment.

Nuclear power is not a silver bullet either as it's pricy as hell, And it's not like their no legitimate concerns of having any kind of power generation near you.

Hopefully, I'll figure it out when I get around to replacing my truck in another 10-15 years.

My real concerns are the heavy diesel using transport vehicles and how to shift them away from it.
Trucks, rail, air , shipping...

There'll need to be a paradigm shift along the line in battery tech for this to occur.
Solid state tech won't do it ... Graphene might. In 10-20 years Dunno

Not sure what the solution may be tbh. It's complicated. We evolved and became industrialized this way.

4 trillion kWh for an entire country divided by 5 million kWh for a plant run 24/7/365 is enough for 800 nuclear power plants. And once we get past the knee-jerk objections, I don't see why this can't happen.

And even if it does become that hard, well, do you really think we can keep depending on oil forever? The most optimistic estimates say we'll hit peak oil in a bit less than a century, and the most pessimistic ones say we already have. And once we do, it'll be all downhill from there. Sooner or later, we have to figure out alternatives. And frankly, in terms of both environmental impact and practicality, nuclear energy is still the best option we've got.

It's quite simple.

At our current population - there IS no solution.

We don't need to fix the hardware.

We need to fix the meatware.

...

And yes - I have no kids - due to a vasectomy 30 years ago. So I did my part.

No, we need to solve the hardware

By the time they convert I should be dead.

Even if still alive I doubt I'll be the one in control of transportation options.

I'll be super happy that someone other than tesla is in the market and buy one of their reasonably priced vehicles, business as usual - just like I have, and my parents have, and parents parents have. I already use a converted jenny tractor. I couldn't make the money I do without it.

Everytime The Wife gets an electric hydrid rental she lists off the pros and cons to me...sooo, you know - good for the environment, good for my bottom line, and a pretty girl wants me to buy one.

Where's the line?

I don't know how this turned into some malthusian fetish other than the fact that you probably think about at least -some- people just disappearing on a regular basis, OLB. The population isn't the problem, the population is your problem. Go fuck yourself.

Don't get me wrong...go off grid. Just know that you'll pay more to go off grid for the same tech that the rest of us will be using on grid, a grid which uses more and more of that tech itself. Stubborn penury.....and 20 years from now people like you will storm the capital building thinking someone other than themselves and their own parents impoverished them. My kids will buy your land for a song and turn a profit with janky electric tractors, made by gm. Third verse same as the first. No one will remember that you ever existed, and no one will believe that anyone ever levied the objections you have.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I'm shocked in 2021 anybody still gives Malthusian population theories any credence considering they have been shown to be consistently wrong.

I'm not. There have always been people who looked at some other and thought that they represented excess and unnecessary pop...never considering that they, themselves, are the waste of human space.

Not that it matters, ofc, since those alleged wastes of human space end up owning the things that their detractors would deny them. Malthus was a sixth child who had three children, I'm guessing no one knows their names.
