The world doesn't seem to collapse in the face of grandfather clauses, they're a routine component of just about any change in us gun law.

Rifles are stamped by their manufacturer...you dense motherfucker. There's little chance that you'll ever have occasion to be asked, but questions of the legal provenance of a firearm are really easy to resolve.

US gun law says we can grandfather a firearm, we've done it before and we'll do it again. Is this an actual problem, or a problem for the tantrum you intended to throw? A grandfather clause specifically exempts those collectors as criminals.

I didn't write the brady bill. In fact I've never once in my life written a gun law, let alone added a grandfather clause. It's not my idea, but it is how gun bans work in mere reality, in the US.

I can see why it's a good idea, you must be able to see it too - since you were concerned about collectors being made into prosperous criminals. They can't be..though they can attempt to sell a restricted or banned firearm. Then they haven't been made criminals so much as they are criminals. That, in effect, is where grey and black market firearms already come from, anyway. It's something I can see them doing.

Gun law in this country is a contradiction in terms. What we have is gun chaos.

More the appearance of chaos. We're strangely responsible with firearms and have hundreds of laws to that effect*. Nuts hate those laws, but don't ask them what they are cuz they don't know...it's just that all law somehow appears to be tyranny to them. The case the supremes are about to hear is only about concealed carry as a pretext. They'll use the decision to gut all kinds of laws all over the country. That's why they brought it. Not for any specific injury, it's intended as a weapon with wider applications.

*this only counts state and fed, not county or municipal regulations and restrictions. There are thousands upon thousands of those, and no one notices. Just as there are many, many guns per american man woman and child. No one else even comes close outside of a warzone, and we stubbornly refuse to become one.
