Trans is simply a prefix, it's been around a very long time, to describe many things. Transgenders don't get to claim it.
Context matters. When speaking of people in the context of gender, referring to them as ‘trans’ is universally taken to mean ‘transgender’ and only that. It doesn’t mean transvestite, transsexual, transcontinental, or transportation.
