Does the left think ALL cops are bad?

It’s been quite some time but I used to run in anarchist circles in Portland - I don’t know this as a fact, but I think the core of those people protesting endlessly do think all cops are bad. They’re leftist radicals though not run of the mill liberals.

Personally, I do think all cops are bad but it’s a big concession that I fully admit I will call upon the police when I need them. I have done so in the past and consider the response I received from the police heroic.

To me personally, anarchism is about not needing to be governed rather than being ungovernable. But I still deeply respect what they’ve done in Portland and I hope they manage to finally burn that federal courthouse down. My feelings aren’t only anger; it’s partly sadness. America and capitalism have failed me so profoundly I’m not interested in improving on this paradigm anymore. I’m not inspired to take my old bones out there and tear it down but I’d be fine with seeing it go. Part of it is political and part of it is personal and all of it very complicated.

Regardless of what you think of the remaining 2 1/2 minutes of the video, the first 15 seconds do pretty clearly show a riot squad officer chasing a fleeing woman, knocking her down, and hitting her with his baton. And if there were alternate explanations for what exactly was happening or what would have made something like this defensible, somehow, I get the feeling that at least one of these guys would have at least said so.

But they didn't. The city of Portland released this memo from the former members of the RRT that explains why they did it. While they didn't explicitly say something like "we believe it is our right to knock fleeing people to the ground and hit them in the head," given that they A) waited until one of their own had been indicted, B) claimed that not being able to do shit like that is somehow making their jobs harder, even though I fail to see how tackling and beating a fleeing woman who may not even be a protester is supposed to help their job, it's kind of hard to see it any other way.
