What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?

In addition to the word NOT being "shock collar" but actually "shot caller" in an organized crime, gang context*, I have also learned that it is NOT "card shark" but "card sharp" when referring to someone particularly skilled in playing cards.

*the shot caller thing I actually learned 1-2 years ago but thought I'd bring it up as something that I do with mishearing crime drama tv and making assumptions that make it make sense in my own head, rather than looking into it further. For instance, I thought they were called shock collars because like you'd put on a dog to keep them in bounds, the guy in that role was the enforcer for the crew/gang to keep everyone in line. I mean...I'm kinda right about the function of the role, just not the actual words people are saying.

That when  it comes to Xmas turkey, 'Special' doesn't necessarily mean cheap!

One super market chain had 3kg [frozen] turkeys for $32 .Went to one I don't go to all that much.  Same brand of frozen turkey , $30 for 4kg. Now that's getting on to 10 lbs.  There will be two of us for  lunch and neither of us is a big eater any more.

Should I send the left over turkey to starving people in the US? (Yes, I know. Good thing I don't believe in hell, or that's where I'd be going for that one)    Angel

Leftover turkey freezes well (provided you wrap it properly). Save the leftovers for turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, turkey soup, turkey rissoles, turkey hash, turkey curry, turkey flambé…

You guys are getting screwed! We paid $.57/Lb for a turkey. Only requirement was to spend $25 on other groceries at the regular prices.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Playing the song 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites' by Skrillex reduces mosquito bites and also hinders their ability to mate.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

J.R.R. Tolkien was nominated by fellow author CS Lewis for the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature, but was overlooked because the jury said the quality of his storytelling wasn't good enough.

In 2007, Navy SEAL Mike Day was shot 27 times by three al-Qaeda gunman and knocked unconscious by a grenade. When he awoke, he managed to kill two of them and escape to the extraction helicopter. He has now recovered and is participating in Ironman competitions.
