Albert DeSalvo, most famous of the Boston Stranglers, was originally sent to the Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane. He escaped, not necessarily because of the normal reasons, but to try and become a whistleblower for the horrific conditions there.
It worked just enough that he got transferred to Walpole Prison. But the whistleblowing part did not pan out; regardless of DeSalvo's reputation or his own motives, it likely wouldn't have done any good. As the video above explains, around the same time, Frederick Wiseman was trying to get his documentary about the hospital, Titicut Follies released, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts fought tooth and nail to have the film destroyed, eventually succeeding in it just being banned for over two decades. If someone like Frederick Wiseman couldn't get the news out, would anyone have cared about what DeSalvo had to say?
