All I know is that there’s some guy on Degrassi named Claude everyone’s calling Clode, so, knowing this is a strange pronunciation even by the standards of Canada, so I look up the pronunciation, and find out that, apparently, in the French-speaking world, it’s pronounced (and the orthography is purely from the IPA) klod, but in the English speaking world (except for Australia and evidently Canada), it’s pronounced klɔd.

^I took several units of Roman history at uni, and one of my professors had an absolute obsession with the Emperor Claudius. Any time a student pronounced it ‘Clawdius’, he’d go absolutely spare and launch into the explanation I just gave.

Looking through Wiktionary, it looks like the pronunciation you championed is more used with Romance languages and their associated countries. And, of course, neither English nor French are Romance languages.

My mistake there, I was probably thinking of languages closer to Latin, like Spanish and Italian, which do retain the Cloud pronunciation,
