How old is your PC? HDD's do of course fail, but shouldn't for ages. My present PC is about 2 years old. I had a local MSY build it for me. It has a 1TB internal SSD no HDD. Faster than an HDD, no moving parts, and should last longer. . I'm not fond of having an OS on an external drive. However if I had to do it I would definitely get say a 500GB SSD at least and partition it. I've done this with mine. I have a 200Gb partition for the OS. The rest is other storage. I store large files on the external drives.
In terms of copying data. Have a look at ACRONIS. I have it for back up. It will also make a boot disc in case you need to do a clean install. So you might be able to use that on your external drive. Also has a function called 'Clone Disc', but I'm not quite sure how that works. It's currently $39.99 but comes with 30 days free. Don't know if that is full functioning. Perhaps you could check to see exactly what the features do to see if it's what you want. Good luck. The 39.99 is for a perennial licence. You have to look around their site to find that offer. Took me a while.
Oh, if you know how, have you tried installing Linux so you have dual boot system? I had a mate do that for me. This is on an el cheapo Lenova laptop ( EBAY $348) It's quite a good computer. The only issue is that it has a Celeron processor, which makes Windows very slow. So Use Linux Mint and the response times are a LOT better, about half I reckon.

I have no idea of your knowledge base, so I ask this on the off chance. I'm completely self taught, so have some irritating grey areas, such as routers. However, I'm picking fair bit with this issue
I have a router problem. An ASUS TM AC1900. I recently did a hard factory reset. I've been through it multiple times and even reset it again.
It's an authentication issue on the TCL 55X2US Android TV. I have two external hard drives, on which I have mainly movies and TV shows. No problem connecting those 2 external drives to the PC
When I try to connect via SMB I get this message: " The computer you are trying to connect to requires authentication.
Please provide a username (ideally a domain name using the format DOMAIN; username and a password"
Connection via UpnP works partially, in that it does not recognise the TV folders.
I have no idea what to use. The only domain I've been able to find does not use "Domain" I presume the username and password will be those of the server? I've tried all that with no luck.
Apparently this is a reasonably common problem. If I can't fix it today, I will be spending a lot of time trawling through those alleged fixes .
Have also posted the issue on Whirlpool forums. They tend to be a bit patchy, with only a few people who actually know what they're talking about.

I would recommend looking for instructions for setting up SMB sharing that are similar to your setup and go through the steps of setting it up from scratch.
SMB problems can be complex and hard to isolate; starting over with your configuration is probably the fastest way to a solution.

Thanks for that. Because the issue only began after I'd done the factory reset I'm pretty sure I've done something wrong.
The PC is connected to the router by ethernet. I just happen to have 30 metres of ethernet cable, so I connected the TV by ethernet to the router. Same problem, so I'm thinking another reset. I will leave default values as much as possible.
So, I'll need to set up the VPN (click ON + box with 'open VPN')
At present I have port forwarding set up but not a static IP address. My nerdy mate who set up the router insisted. Are they absolutely needed?
So I'm thinking the error is likely to be in the LAN or Wifi settings. Be grateful if you can suggest anything else I should look at.

It might. SMB and NAT don't play nicely. However, you've likely got a layer of NAT with both static and dynamic IPs, and your old config took that into account.

I'd need to know a lot more information to make more specific suggestions, and frankly, solving problems like this via forum or chat is a long drawn-out process that I don't intend to engage in.

I followed your suggestions and found an article about setting up Samba. It's not going well at present because the router won't let me give the devices read/write authority. I shall persevere, stopping for coffee when I am tempted to destroy the router, which is just about where I'm at. Nothing makes me feel stupid quicker than a computer and peripherals.
Oh, I've just done a hard reset, and everything else is just dandy. I have internet and the VPN is fine( I set up DDNS because there was a message in yellow suggesting I do so. I've set it up for FTP, so I guess I could do that as a work around. I'll leave that as a last resort. I prefer solutions rather than work arounds because then I actually learn.

External SSDs are a premium; you'd be better off with just a regular USB external hard disk for backing up stuff. I prefer Western Digital My Book series, but the Elements or Easystore or other basic Western Digital external hard drive would probably work just as well. Seagate would be a second choice. Look on Amazon and check the price history using camelcamelcamel to get an idea of how much they should cost. I'll link an example. You'll still need a hard disk to replace the ailing hard disk if that disk is dying.
This is at a decent price right now. Being on the smaller side, the price per gigabyte is higher than for larger drives, but I suspect 4 TB is more than you need.

Windows 7 and 10 do not have smb ver 1 or 2 active by default. You need to go to add/remove and add samba ver 1 and 2 (tick them).
It may or may not fix your domain authentication issues. Many other issues can cause it.

Clattering hdd definitely needs replaced before it crashes completely. The system image utility in windows should do fine. Plug in the new solid state drive and use the tool it will work fine.
That will help isolate the other problems. If u r aware the gpu requires a higher watt power supply then those are required changes. A new power supply is fairly cheap and easy to do. I would replace those 2 at a minimum then see where u are at

Here's an article on the process. I'm not familiar with creating a system image in Windows and so I don't know if it only backs up the system or the entire drive.
But apparently you can create a bootable USB stick to restore a system image.
