Well, he did get a lot of death threats and he was stabbed in the chest, so ok.

RE: Why have a gun?
There probably aren't many people who don't get the whole "these fuckers are trying to kill me" reason for going out and grabbing a gun. It's the ones who think that when no one is trying to kill them that might leave a guy puzzled and worried about the safety of other people, primarily. Like the guy who tells you he had to get a glock to protect his flatscreen in the third world warzone of middle america, for example.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

RE: Why have a gun?
Each person has to figure out if having a gun is worth it. For myself, I don't live somewhere where armed home invasion is a thing.

The chances of me needing a gun for home defense is far less than the chance of someone in the family getting shot by it (suicide, depression, accident, etc.). If I owned a gun, I would store it locked at a range (yes, I know ranges get broken into - the thieves could get some old .22 single-fire bolt action for their troubles. They could buy it at Canadian Tire for less trouble).

Quote:For when armed dirtbags break into your home. Glad to see a homeowner win.
So you own a gun due to the highly improbable chance there will break in and you will be home and you'll be in a situation where you can actually use it. That's too many ifs for my liking

Quote:Most people never need a fire extinguisher either.

But when you do - nothing else works quite as well..
The probability of you experiencing a fire far exceeds the probability you will be robbed by an armed person and have the opportunity to fight back. Also, this logic to its conclusion why acquire everything you could possibly need for every possible scenario no matter how outlandish?

RE: Why have a gun?
Quote:6. Guns in the home are used more often to intimidate intimates than to thwart crime

Using data from a national random-digit-dial telephone survey conducted under the direction of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, we investigated how and when guns are used in the home. We found that guns in the home are used more often to frighten intimates than to thwart crime; other weapons are far more commonly used against intruders than are guns.

7. Adolescents are far more likely to be threatened with a gun than to use one in self-defense

We analyzed data from a telephone survey of 5,800 California adolescents aged 12-17 years, which asked questions about gun threats against and self-defense gun use by these young people. We found that these young people were far more likely to be threatened with a gun than to use a gun in self-defense, and most of the reported self-defense gun uses were hostile interactions between armed adolescents. Males, smokers, binge drinkers, those who threatened others and whose parents were less likely to know their whereabouts were more likely both to be threatened with a gun and to use a gun in self-defense.

11. Self-defense gun use is rare and not more effective at preventing injury than other protective actions

Victims use guns in less than 1% of contact crimes, and women never use guns to protect themselves against sexual assault (in more than 300 cases). Victims using a gun were no less likely to be injured after taking protective action than victims using other forms of protective action. Compared to other protective actions, the National Crime Victimization Surveys provide little evidence that self-defense gun use is uniquely beneficial in reducing the likelihood of injury or property loss.

At work.

"Why have a gun?"

Because they can be a fun recreational item and are useful farm implements.

Great

Cheers.

RE: Why have a gun?
When people ask me why I don’t own a gun and I say, ‘Because I’m happy about the size of my penis,’ they get all cranky.
