Reminds me of a chemistry presentation that I went to with my young daughter given at a local 4-year college. A young college chemistry student had given a nice demonstration to me and my daughter and then politely asked, "Do you have any questions?" Being the mischievous individual that I am, I asked her, "This reaction, is it exothermic or endothermic?" Her professor was standing nearby and gave her womanly, "How dare you!" look at me. The poor young girl just froze, as if I had hit the pause button on a VHS tape, and finally smiled, saying "Neither". I smiled back, thanking her for her presentation, and walked to the next booth while wondering how a chemical reaction that generates light could involve no heat??? (Hmmm.)

Not to mention that exactly what "greater" means in that formulation is subject to interpretation. Greater has no dimensions; it's just a superlative.

Avalanche of sand. Popsicle stick raked 135°, wind blows and sand clumps on stick then breaks loose causing a sand avalanche.
Wind and gravity caused an avalanche (effect).

This doesn't refute the responses above
A lesser cause can cause a greater effect. Thus minds being the product of biological processes is not a violation of causality
An avalanche can be caused by the smallest breeze and gravity merely is the means by which the sand falls not the cause of the fall. That would be the wind.

IMHO appealing to so-called emergent properties to explain the appearance of novel properties is no better than god-did-it claims.

No, GOD caused the avalanche. Isaiah 45:7.

Aside from the fact that emergent things demonstrably exist while gods have no such evidence in their favor. So kindly reframe from false comparisons.

You mean like the emergent properties of pressure, temperature, and entropy coming from the statistical properties of the motion of molecules? All novel properties. All much better than a 'goddidit' claim.

Intentionality and qualia are nothing like any of those examples. You do see that, right?
