May I ask what prompted this rule? None of the threads I read had any racial flame wars and if they did I would put those users on ignore. Guess I do not understand making rules that carving away at the free expression of grown-up free thinkers. AF has always been gloriously irreverent and censorship seems antithetical to its spirit.

I could repeat the reason that it surfaced again for the third time but you can find the explanation in this thread.

The PSA Boru posted was a reminder that there is a rule regarding this issue.  It was in no way an announcement of a new rule. I really thought you might actually be smarter than this.

Soooo...if someone asks what the letters of the rap group NWA mean, it is a violation to inform them. An absurd example ,for sure, but to me it illustrates the absurdity of assuming that grown-ups cannot hear ugly words.

That said, if the forum rules said all posts had to be written in third- person, then "dems da rules" and I could find another forum. So I have no problem with forum rules.

But what would you expect from atheists.

Now, you get to decide if I just violated the rules by using the word atheist in an insulting way. Can "atheist" be a slur? I think the personal experience of most who had a repressive religious upbringing know that to be called an atheist would be a slur.

What an incredibly stupid question.

Having a butcher's at our Rules page is a terrific way to find answers to questions like this. The hate speech rule, which (again) has been in place for a long, long time, specifies that hate speech targeting 'race, gender, sex, and sexual orientation' is what is prohibited. Until 'atheist' falls under one of these categories, I think you'll be safe using that word.

Instead of treating an asshole like an asshole (is that a slur btw?) deserves, the staff decided to gag every single member of the forum instead? Does not compute here.

If you feel as though you are being limited by not being able to use a racial slur, I must say I am surprised.  You seem to be a pretty decent sort who doesn't feel the need to find 'cutesy' videos just so you can use the N word on the forum.  Particularly after asking if it's okay and being told that it isn't okay.

There's no doubt in my mind that there are plenty of forums where using such language is not only accepted but expected and possibly required.  This is not that place.

I understood the "issue" with this unnamed member like this: He wants to post some video with a (racial?) slur, and instead of telling him to f.## off with his BS, you rather addressed the whole forum (aka every single OTHER member) and reminded them that they would face consequences if they use any slurs.

Maybe there is a language barrier here (especially regarding slurs), idk, but if i see a someone saying misogynist racist or whatever BS, i would like to be allowed to call them out as such (and maybe add a slur, for good measure ). Is this now being rewarded with (permanent) bans?

My more general concern was that it seemed to me that instead to dealing with some ( i assume) single reprehensible forum member, the whole forum was addressed out of fear of being accused of applying different standards to people (aka the "member" and the "rest of the forum").

Edit/Example:
Lets say i want to call out someone as a "racist *person who has a sexual relationship with his mother*", would that be a bannable offense now?
