Go to 43:00 of the movie: I think everything was very well known about concentration camps
I’ve seen it more than once (I’m a huge Chaplin fan), and the film mentions nothing about the extermination camps. The scene you refer to mentions the ghettos and ‘prison camps’, that’s all.
The world wasn’t aware of the beginnings of the Holocaust until 1941. ‘The Great Dictator’ was released in 1940.

Quote:As early as March 1942, reports of a Naziplan to murder all the Jews – including details on methods, numbers, and locations – reached Allied and neutral leaders. The first is believed to be a dispatch from the Chilean consul in that was written in November 1941 and obtained by British and American intelligence in March 1942.
The New York Times people are very, very good at what they do. Time travelers, though, they ain’t. Dachau didn’t even become an extermination camp until after the Wannsee Conference in 1942.

Please read this.
I did. It doesn’t support your point. Yes, Dachau was in existence as both a political prison and a concentration camp since 1933. It became an
extermination camp in 1942.
Nothing in that article establishes that the world know about the Nazi’s systematic extermination of Jews (and others) prior to 1941. It was common knowledge that the Jews were being treated horribly, but the full extent of that horror wasn’t fully realized until the camps were liberated.

if i am not mistaken, the systematic extermination of jews in a way occurring clearly separately from the general german brutality against professional, leadership, and intelligentsia of eastern occupied territory was organized around the Wennsee Conference in early 1942.
Prior to that information about Nazi abuse and extermination of the jews may be perceived as not a separate thing but one manifestation of the general german racist son-of-a-bitchness in the east.

I spent a summer going through the NYT and other newspapers, looking for information about the situation of the Jews and other minorities in the German-held territories.
The next summer I did a history of the Obergammergau Passion Play.
DAMN, I only missed one letter. That was 25 years ago.
