The Integration of Religion into the Education System

The Integration of Religion into the Education System
This is a very divisive issue. There is about 7 million Muslims living in France. Islam is the second largest religion in the country. While there are about 7000 Catholic Schools and (probably around 100) Jewish schools (for the 0,5 million Jews living in France) there is 127 Muslim Schools in the Country today. One of them was even chose “The Best High school” in 2008.

So I don’t really like this idea Smile

Have you attended a parochial school? I have. At the time I was in Catholic high school it was one of the best educational facilities around. There was a public school option but my parents opted against it.

Do you always spend your time looking for things to bitch about? It sure seems as though you do.

1) No. It wasn’t like a school. Here we have Quran Courses for Children (which are either free or very cheap). I attended it a few times. I cannot say I learned a lot.

2) I believe in the value of discussion in this type of religious / social subjects. You are no longer within the field of philosophy when you have a “I said it so it must be true” type of attitude. If you understand what I am saying Smile

I know that there can be religious schools that provide a good quality education without strongly imposing any moral or spiritual value on children. Knowing that public schools are not always better-quality schools (depending on where you live in the US), I understand that you parents probably made a good choice.

So as I said I am not such a strong opponent of religious schools. There has to be a few good ones. But I am still raising awareness on the fact that people who believe in the benefits of religious indoctrination at an early age love the idea of “religious education” too.

To me it’s a contradiction. I believe in a God that is present within each and every one of us so I don’t see a “need” for a religious education.
