He always struck me as too good a man to be in elective politics (chiefly because of his refusal to tell porkie pies). I honestly believe he would have been more successful as an ambassador than as President.

I am not sure he was cutthroat enough for national politics. Luckily, it didn't seem to destroy him. He kept to the personal standards he brought to the White House.
