For those more familiar with deer sounds

I listened to some audio, did my best to describe it, but maybe someone here can help me better understand how it sounds.

The specific sound to which I am referring is the wheeze.

The dictionary describes it as a heavy breathing, but I don't know if that's adequate.

What sounded like an obnoxious grunt brought his attention to an animal that stood between two trees and stared at him with large ebony eyes. In many ways it resembled a deer, if a yeti procreated with a spirit of jubilee. Although not translucent, as a spirit would be, there was a quality of phantasm about its shaggy, metallic-like fur.

The next sound that came from the large beast made him feel uncomfortable. Although there was no malice in its gentle eyes, there did seem to be a challenge there. And the heavy wheeze that came from its throat seemed to carry with it the notion of danger, unless in his ignorance of animal behavior he was misinterpreting it.
