I'm sure a survey like the one tearfund do would reach similar conclusions in the US... ie substantially different to the commonly held perception.

UK people consider themselves Christians from a Christian nation without ever having visited a church in most instances, let alone actually having a belief which would reflect the slightest understanding of their claim.

I, too, have noticed how so many people in this country call themselves Christians but never attend church. I'd say the vast majority of so-called Christians never go to church. But, on the other hand, they seem to want to defend very strongly the idea that this is a Christian nation and support Christianity in general and are against atheism. But, also, many of them are lukewarm Christians who might believe in God & Jesus but only because of family/cultural reasons. They may not fully believe all the dogma or may not even know it at all, but still consider themselves Christian.

I think there is hope for the future since the few times I've attended church I've noticed that there are very few young adults (18-30) there. Recent polls have shown that they don't think that religion is that important as compared to older people. In fact, if you ever find yourself in a church during services, it appears that most of the people attending are in the 50+ crowd. Once those people die off, churches will be very empty places, indeed.

I remember seeing in some documentary (was it Jesus Camp? I don't remember) a Christian fundie smugly claiming that Christians were such a majority in this country that they can choose who the next president would be. I guess they're not such a majority that they couldn't prevent a black Kenyan-born Muslim terrorist abortionist antichrist from winning the election over McSame and Fundie Failin'. Christian fundies always love to claim that Christians are such a majority in this country (so they should get to do what they want), but when it comes down to "true" Christians, they just don't realize how much of a minority they really are.

The include catholics and mormons in their totals when it suits them and claim they aren't xtians when it doesn't.

I break it down into three major reasons:

#1 - The most important reason is the fear of death. They want to live forever in a paradise with family and friends that they like to be around. Everyone else may be subject to not going to said paradise, or may even be subject to eternal torture, depending on how big of a cunt the person holding the beliefs are.

-Fear of death quinched, and you even get a bonus paradise forever with Grandmaw and Spot!

#2 - Christians need a quick answer for everything they dont understand or know. They dont like to say "I dont know". Saying "God did it" not only makes them feel they have an answer for things, but it also reafirms their belief stated in #1. God did it all. No need to really have to think hard about it. No reason to really go to school and learn about some of these things (im not trying to say no christian goes to college), and even then you can squeeze a god inbetween of what is learned.

-Fear of the unknown quenched, and you even get a bonus quick, easy answer for anything and everything.

#3 - The more fundamental they become, the more anti-social they become. Not all Christians fall into the #3 category, but all fundies DEFINITELY do. They dont like things that are different, strange, new, or out of the norm. The devil obviously has some sort of play in this situation on these people because if they knew better they would be living and acting the way the fundy lives and acts. If the fundy doesnt like something, their is usually a suggestion that it become illegal to do so, along with draconian if not mortal fines to be paid for daring to be different. Reverse psychology and child psychology is typically played upon those who are different, such as a gay man who openly admits he is gay in the presence of a society that condemns it. The gay mans brave act will instead be restamped as a "cowardly and depraved" act, and if he "only had the courage", he would join the social norm.

-Fear of differences quenched, you even get a bonus "God hates and loves what I hate and love" excuse to ease any burdon on your conscious. You arent being a dick, you are being a messenger. God said it, and God is all good. 'nuff said.
