Are we supposed to pass students as long as they insert Bible verses into their essays now?

The Russian Orthodox Patriarch Kirill is always accompanied by a mistress

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) has, contrary to Orthodox canon law, taken a civil partner. Moreover, he reportedly registers many of his assets in her name.

According to the obtained data, for over 50 years he has been accompanied by Lidia Leonova, who effectively fulfills the role of a civil wife. Although Russian official propaganda refers to her as the “third cousin” of the patriarch, analyses of biographies and archival documents do not confirm any familial relationship between them.

The relationship between Gundyayev and Leonova (née Kholodova) began in Leningrad, where she was the daughter of a CPSU regional committee cook. When the future patriarch was transferred to service in Smolensk in 1984, she moved with him. Witnesses who visited Kirill’s residence during his time as metropolitan describe Leonova as the person who fully manages the patriarch’s household, handles gifts, and is involved in his business dealings with associates. Despite the fact that, as a monk, the patriarch is forbidden to be married, Leonova accompanies him on private trips on VIP liners, including extended visits to Baku.

A significant portion of real estate and valuable property associated with the patriarch is legally registered either in Lidia Leonova’s name or their joint company, pointedly named Vladolid (likely a combination of the names Vladimir and Lidia). Among the identified assets are:

●Luxury real estate: a 200-square-meter apartment and a flat in a historic building in Saint Petersburg, as well as the controversially famous apartment in Moscow’s House on the Embankment, worth millions of dollars.

●Country estates: plots and a cottage in the Moscow region near Patriot Park, as well as housing in the prestigious Old Stables neighborhood of Moscow

●Car fleet: a series of luxury vehicles, including BMW X5 and Lexus models, purchased and registered in Leonova’s name over the past 15 years.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The strange thing about that framing is that the Bible is only obliquely quoted. She spends a lot time about the meaning of “ezer kenegdo” in the Bible, but very little on the actual paper she was suppposed to be reacting to.

And we even have the rubric she was supposed to be graded on. Not to mention the exact responses both the TA and her supervisor gave to the essay. So you can even try it for yourself.* Or you can watch Dead Domain do so:

This is like that scene from The Stupids where Tom Arnold loses his job at the post office after demanding a full-scale investigation into who “Sender” is and why so much mail is being returned to him, and he walks away thinking there’s some conspiracy and not that he was an idiot.

* Worth noting: word count alone was supposed to be worth ten points. The count was meant to be a minimum 650 words with 10 points docked for a word count between 620 and 649 words. Fulnecky’s essay was 630 words.

Not just pass them but also let the eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” literally end the professor's career.

In fairness, I suspect she might have actually read the article… she just doesn’t seem to be able to process the idea of “if someone doesn’t want to follow rigid gender roles, you shouldn’t try and force that square peg into a round hole.”
